Picture Perfect?: How one college student is advocating for change in her community

Social media is one of the fastest ways to get information and one college student in Milwaukee is using it to bring awareness to important topics that impact the community.
Christina Boyd is a student at UW-Milwaukee and she said she’s always had a passion for social justice. Last summer when many people in the city were protesting against police brutality, she wanted to get involved to help educate others while spreading positivity.
She did that by creating her Instagram page, “Woke Wednesdays 414.” In the posts, she talks about issues that impact people in Milwaukee such as segregation, food insecurity, history and housing. “There were a lot of outside people looking in that didn't really understand and I felt Instagram is the best platform,” said Boyd.
But instead of making her posts "reactionary," like many she was seeing, she said she wanted to help people understand why things were happening and give people an approachable way to learn more about her longtime home, Milwaukee.
